Anger & Emotions

Anger is usually protection. It's covering hurt, fear, or a need that isn't being met. Understanding what's underneath changes how you respond to it.

What's happening

What's underneath the anger

Anger is a secondary emotion, a fast, powerful response that usually shows up when something underneath is hurting. When it's injustice, powerlessness, shame, fear or unmet needs, anger is often the only way they get expressed.

The goal is to understand your anger, slow the gap between feeling and response, and learn to channel what's going on in a way that works for you and your relationships.

For neurodivergent people, emotional dysregulation and anger can be particularly intense and fast-moving. We work with your neurology.

What we work on together

Anger shows up differently for everyone.

Sessions often cover these areas.

Understanding what's under the anger

We map the emotion underneath, the hurt, fear, or need driving the anger.

In practice: Using a feelings wheel to identify what's underneath the anger, then practising responses for the next time it comes up.

The physiology of anger

Anger has a physical signature, fast heart rate, tunnel vision, heat. We work on recognising these early signals and creating space before they escalate.

In practice: Mapping your personal anger escalation sequence, from first signal to full intensity, and identifying the 30-second window where a different choice is possible.

Communicating needs without explosive delivery

When anger shuts conversations down, your needs don't get heard. We work on assertive, clear communication that gets through.

In practice: Rewriting a recent outburst as an "I feel... because... I need..." statement, then practising delivering it calmly.

Emotional regulation for neurodivergent brains

ADHD and autism often come with intense, fast-moving emotions. We work with your specific neurology to find regulation tools that work for how your brain operates.

In practice: Building a personalised regulation toolkit based on your sensory profile, with specific tools for different intensity levels.

Anger & relationships

When anger is affecting your relationships, with partners, kids, colleagues, we work on what's happening in those dynamics and how to shift it.

In practice: Walking through a recent argument together, identifying the moment it escalated, and rehearsing a different approach for next time.

Anger as a justice response

Sometimes anger is an appropriate response to unjust circumstances. We help you channel it so it doesn't burn you or your relationships down.

In practice: Identifying what injustice is driving the anger and brainstorming constructive channels for it, whether that's advocacy, boundary-setting, or creative expression.

Cost, eligibility & getting started

The practical side.

What it costs

Sessions for anger and emotion work follow the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits, with the cost depending on the type of session and whether it's a weekday, evening, or weekend appointment. You can also access this work privately, without NDIS funding, or through other schemes. Whatever the funding path, cost is always confirmed in writing before anything starts.

Am I eligible?

This kind of support usually sits under Capacity Building, Improved Daily Living (or Improved Relationships where anger is affecting family dynamics). If your plan includes that funding, you can use it here. A support coordinator or plan manager can help confirm what's in your plan. No relevant NDIS funding? Private, self-funded sessions are available too, and you don't need a diagnosis to reach out.

Where we work

We're based in Thomastown and work across Greater Melbourne, including the northern, western, and eastern suburbs. Online telehealth sessions are available too, and some of our support extends into regional Victoria. We'll figure out what's practical for you.

How to start

Get in touch by phone, our contact form, or email. The first conversation is about what's going on for you, and you share as much as you want to. From there, we match you with a counsellor who suits you and aim to have a first session booked within a few business days.

Anger is something you can work on.

Give us a call and we'll plan the first conversation together.
